We are getting lots of reports from people who attended the public hearing in Hilo on whether to grant a construction permit for the TMT on Mauna Kea. From what we heard:
51 people testified, 31 in opposition (UH Hilo students were well-represented).
Meeting went to 10:00 pm.
People really engaged with staff representing DLNR for their failure to adequately protect the natural and cultural resources of the conservation on the summit.
There is a second hearing tonight in Kona. 6 pm at NELHA.
Check out these reports in the local news:

I really don’t want to see your organization hampered by that sort of issue!
[...] very disappointed that most of the testifiers at the Hilo meeting were against this project. These individuals have a very shortsighted view of the Big Island’s future. We cannot [...]
Iʻm so sorry sir, but you have that backwards, you are the ones with the shortsighted goal of the Big Islandʻs future! TMT is a temporary facility on the top of our water shed that, if built, will not be there forever, since the lease of the conservation district on Maunakeaʻs summit expires in 2033! We cannot allow your shortsighted plan destroy our resources that give us the possibility of becoming self-sustainable…which is the future of life on earth whether you choose to believe so or not.
I absolutely don’t have a shortsighted view of the Big Island’s future. We need to diversify our economy away from tourism, construction, military, and real estate. So, I fully support astronomy development as a way to diversify our economy.
You really don’t think more Targets, Lowe’s, Home Depots will provide a solid economic base for future generations.
